President Jon Purmont called the June meeting to order on Thursday the 14th at 7:00pm.
The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted as read.
Lois Doerr gave the Treasurer’s report, in Sandy’s absence, and it was accepted.
Maureen reported for the Archives Committee. She said there was a nice turnout for the statewide museum day exhibit. The committee thanked everyone for their hard work in putting it together.
Old Business:
The historic plaque program, in conjunction with the Rotary Club, is moving forward. Several additional properties have been identified – Keenan’s Funeral Home (a 19th century house) and the Queen Anne style house at the corner of First and Main streets. The Hubbard house, off Jones Hill Road, has agreed to allow a plaque. This house was built around 1740 and was known as the Merwin-Hubbard House.
Jon thanked the members who work on the exhibits and decorate the house for events and the seasons. In particular be thanked Maureen and Ellen Klein.
New Business:
The scheduled speaker for the evening, tree expert Leo Kelly, had to cancel at the last minute.
Robin Parsons ably filled in. She spoke on the Connecticut Sustainability Council, which West Haven’s City Council recently voted to join. The Sustainability Council is not just an environmental group. Their goal is to help a community develop a sense of place and to thrive because of it. Their web site is: SustainableCT.org.
Jon asked that we spread the word that the Historical Society will take artifacts related to West Haven.
The meeting adjourned at 7:35pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Lois Dioro
